I love this quote for many reasons; firstly, it’s attributed to Marcus Aurelius, whose thoughts and ideas I love and are still influencing people’s attitudes and behaviour thousands of years later. Secondly, it is an ancient version of Nike’s famous Just Do It tagline, the idea that the important thing is to begin…that it’s better to start something than do nothing. Lastly, it reinforces the idea that to achieve any change and improvement you desire, it’s not necessary to take huge strides, but rather small and incremental steps daily in pursuit of the greater goal. This is something that people often forget in the search for quick, noticeable results…
"Get a move on - if you have it in you - and don’t worry about whether anyone will give you credit for it. And don’t go expecting Plato’s Republic; be satisfied with even the smallest progress, and treat the outcome of it all as unimportant.”
Marcus Aurelius
However, the Dutch (and many others) also believe that it’s important to slow down and take a step back to be able to achieve great things (especially in today’s crazy-paced world), so we take a look at their concept of Niksen. Also covered this week are tips on how to get up and begin running, even if you don’t consider yourself a runner, how to train for a long hike and some ideas on the best ways to prepare for a solo camping adventure…so once you’re done reading our stories this week, I encourage you to get up and do something…no matter how small a step you may take…
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

The Dutch are a pretty laid-back nation, so much so they have a special word for the art of doing nothing, niksen. Could this be the antidote to the burnout that is so prevalent in our culture?

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
I don’t know where to start with this band…since I heard them for the first time recently, they are all I have listened to. Mind Blown. A masked collective of anonymous musicians (Vessel, II, III & IV are their ‘names’) Sleep Token mixes metal, rock and indie (and more) into a truly incredible sonic impact wall of noise. Admittedly, they may not be to everyone’s taste, but if you want to go on a musical journey, often with unexpected twists, look no further…
