I love this quote, it neatly and succinctly captures the idea of being present, focusing on what is in front of you and living in the experience, whatever that may be. You can choose what you spend your physical and mental energy on and your attitude whilst doing it. That can be a game changer in those tough moments whether during a long trail run, hike or in everyday life

"My experience is what I agree to attend to.”

William James

The legendary conch was blown and the insane Barkley Marathons got underway this week. The race is one experience that few people will ever get to go through and even fewer will complete, catch up on the crazy race below…or check out some of the most beautiful hikes across Africa, get ready for an ultramarathon or pack right for the changeable weather…it’s all in this week’s Kings of the Trail.

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

This is One Experience That Is Not For the Faint-Hearted…

This week sees the legendary Barkley Marathons take place. Part ultra, part orienteering and part survival, this brutal race has no spectators and is considered one of the toughest in the world…

Whilst I believe that a lot of completing an ultra marathon comes down to mental attitude, it can’t hurt to train and prepare the right way…

Being prepared for bad weather is essential when the conditions are changeable. Other than the right attitude (knowing when to turn back for example) these items can make a big difference to your experience…

Africa is famed for big wildlife, big skies and big adventures. These carefully selected hikes across the incredibly diverse continent highlight its wonder and beauty…

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Another chilled number this week, but this time from 1970. John Lennon’s Hold On is a lovely, subtle, warm tune. It’s also a good reminder to pay attention to the now, focus on what’s in front of you and just carry on, it will be OK. There is also a brilliant random word thrown in the middle of the song, try and spot it…
