"Be able to be alone. Lost not the advantage of solitude, and the society of thyself.”
Thomas Browne
The Great Alone is a dairy, sketchbook and photojournal recounting one man’s adventure walking along the Pacific Crest Trail. Something stuck with me after reading it. Tim Voors, the author commented that when walking alone for a great distance over a long time, you have the chance to think about various subjects. Really think. Free from distraction. In the space that this time provided, he said, he could contemplate ideas deeply, sometimes coming to conclusions that ultimately surprised him. Anyone who has, or does, spend long periods alone, especially when doing something slightly monotonous and physical, will recognise this state. This is precious. I wish we could all find time with some freedom from outside influences and the chance to contemplate questions we would not otherwise fully think about. Enjoy the solitude, but don’t get too lost…
