“It takes a special energy, over and above one’s creative potential, a special audacity or subversiveness, to strike out in a new direction once one is settled.”

Olivier Sacks

Inductive reasoning is often used in science and mathematics. This form of reasoning takes existing information and observations to provide broad generalizations on outcomes or to predict an event or pattern occurring in the future. By following a trend seen previously, existing information is extrapolated to anticipate what may happen next or how something may react. However, as we have seen from some of the greatest minds in history; whether explorers, inventors, engineers, mathematicians or scientists, this method is fallible and may not provide the best way to make discoveries and break new ground. Great discoveries and events often happen when someone takes a new path, tries a new method or splits from the conceived wisdom and attempts something different to see what is possible. Failure may be more likely, but through these failures, more understanding and knowledge of a situation or event are developed, adding to the process and helping breakthroughs become reality. In our own lives, these moments of clarity and understanding can come from simple changes. For example; trying a new running route, switching up our exercise programme, or attempting a sport that is not one we are familiar with. You could also make massive changes and embark on new adventures; moving to a new country, changing your career or taking on a physically challenging experience for example…but grand missions like these are not required to feel the benefit of switching things up and striking out on new ground. Embrace the fear of failure and see what new knowledge and experiences can be found by simply doing something different to the norm…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Exposure therapy doesn’t exactly sound like a holiday. In a way, it’s not meant to be. This trend in wellness is not for the faint-hearted…

It doesn’t need to be complicated. Trail running is simply running on anything that isn’t concrete. It’s easier to begin than you might expect…

This is a pretty good line to remember; “I’m not scared, because I am prepared.” Packing right is the foundation of any adventure…

The proliferation of women-only running clubs is helping increase females' participation and enjoyment of running…

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

This great tune comes from the guitarist, Gypsy Mitchell. It’s a funky, bluesy number with a rhythmic, wallowing beat and a great message. Worth a listen for his motivational speech at the beginning alone. “Look up, look up, look up!” I can’t find out much about this chap, but I like what I hear…
