“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
Marcus Aurelius
Despite being written almost 2,000 years ago, Marcus Aurelius’ private notes and thoughts contained within Meditations have become essential reading for many modern-day readers and a useful tool to help with personal discovery and growth. Unfortunately, there is not a huge amount of written evidence of Stoic philosophy’s key beliefs and tenets remaining for us to study today. What we do possess are fragments of teachings, lectures and writings, as well as second-hand interpretations of the original Stoics and their perspectives. This is why, even though it was written as a personal journal and not intended to be shared, Meditations has become an important and inspiring document all these years later. Contained within are many wonderful thoughts and quotes, open to interpretation and contemplation, but also almost universally applicable to our modern society and desires despite their age. The quote above (like many great quotes) has more than one meaning and possible interpretation and may have developed as time passes and words are used differently. For me, I tend to overlook the obvious motivational element of this one. I see it more as a reminder or instruction to zoom out and see the bigger picture. We exist in a world of true wonder, joy and beauty. We are lucky enough to be part of this world. We must take the chance to remind ourselves of this and try to fully appreciate, acknowledge and celebrate it every day. At the same time, of course, let us not stop dreaming as to what we can achieve if we run with the stars ourselves…

Going full-on cheesy this week with a piece of pop brilliance from Coldplay. After their awesome set at Glastonbury this summer, this tune came to my mind when thinking about the quote this week. It’s a great running tune too…
