“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
Marcel Proust
Dogs have an incredible array of tools to use as they navigate the world. An incredible sense of smell, amazingly tuned hearing and of course, a completely different perspective on how they see the world. Let’s not talk about their tastes - if my dog’s desire to eat everything he comes across is anything to go by, that one is not quite as fine-tuned as some of their other senses! While they may lack the ability to see as far as humans can, they have other sight tools that help them have a unique view of the world. A wider perspective and field of vision, an increased pupil diameter that helps with seeing at night and brilliant depth perception all help our canine pals manoeuvre, thrive and experience life in a very different way from us. I doubt Proust had dogs in mind when contemplating and penning the above quote, but the ability to be empathetic and considerate of other’s views doesn’t end with our fellow human beings. If you have ever considered the view of the birds circling overhead or your cat curled up on your lap then you will know that this can give you insight and possibly a different view of the world. Being out on the trails can do this too and by taking the time to slow down and view the world differently we might be able to develop more empathy for the people around us and try to walk just a small distance in their shoes. Just don’t copy my dog and start eating everything around you, there is no need for that…
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Each week I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection – just like trail runs or hikes, you can be sure that it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
This mellow tune, appropriately entitled, Cats & Dogs, comes from Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn, featuring Kojey Radical. It contemplates the struggles of everyday life and the need to keep moving forward and working. It was because of Russ Cook, who ran the length of Africa, that I heard of these guys. If it can keep him going during his epic run then it must have something to it…
