"All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination."

Earl Nightingale

I like this quote - not only for the simplicity of its message or that it can be applied to many things in life, not just hiking and running - although both aspects are great elements of a solid quote. For me, interestingly, when I read this quote, I was reminded of a line from one of my favourite films, the (almost 40 years old!!) Robert Zimmericks’ directed time travel adventure classic, Back to the Future. Emmett Doc’ Brown, the mad scientist foil to Michael J Fox’s clean-cut, boyish hero, Marty McFly, tells the open-mouthed protagonists in a memorable closing line at the end of the film, “Roads? Where we are going, we don’t need roads…” Too often in life, we are guilty of overthinking, overcomplicating and overanalysing everything. Whether it is obsessing over the latest kit, a technological breakthrough promising this or that gains, some new app to track where you go or another diet or training fad, sometimes we can get stuck looking for answers in the wrong places. Now and again, the best course of action might be to simply cast off the ropes and head out to unchartered waters. There are many variations of this quote; from the old: Carpe Diem to the newer: Just Do It…and many, many more in between, but the sentiment is the same. The words have changed, but what hasn’t changed over time is that the best step to take is usually just the first one. So pluck up the courage and get out there. As Marty says in the aforementioned film, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.”

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Trail running meets backpacking. Covering ground quickly while being self-supported. An incredible way to get out and explore the world…

We carry our phones in our pockets constantly, so put them to good use when out on the trails to enhance your knowledge and enjoyment of the outdoors with these apps…

Running is not all about the running. These science-backed tips can help you keep bashing out the miles…

Whilst there are women at the top of the trail running world smashing records and winning the best races, participation for other women is not as straightforward, but it’s improving, partly thanks to this group…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Just like trail runs or hikes, it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

Here are a few things to point out about this week’s choice of track:

1) It’s a new one from the incredible musician, Justin Vernon and his band, Bon Iver…

2) It’s a beautiful, simple and charming tune: just as you would expect from this awesomely talented band

3) The song’s meaning and if it has any relevance to this newsletter at all is a little tenuous - it’s certainly not a get-up-and-go tune…

4) Does any of this matter? No, please refer back to points 1 & 2 and simply enjoy this wonderful song...
