"Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen."
Conan O'Brien
Someone who once joked via a tweet: “Tomorrow, I’ll be back where I truly belong - indoors, under artificial light” may not seem like the ideal fit for a newsletter focussing on getting outdoors and being active. However, if you take some time to watch the brilliant commencement speech Conan O’Brien gave at Dartmouth College in 2011, the above snippet of simple wisdom can be found among the many jokes. (It’s worth watching here.) Comedians are often extremely good at observing natural behaviour in people and turning these insights into cracking jokes to make us all laugh and feel a little better about our own idiosyncrasies. This line distils a simple but powerful message that can be referred to throughout our lives. It applies to everything we do and it applies to all the day-to-day interactions we have. It is also particularly apt for the trail running and hiking community. The combination of hard work, dedication, perseverance, kindness and appreciation for nature and the other people around you can lead to incredible experiences out on the trails. Experiences that can stay with you forever and change you as a person. It sounds simple; just do two things - work hard and be kind - and it can be, but if you can use these as your default settings in life the results can be profound and exhilarating.
Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

I am sure our friend Conan O’Brien would come up with a cutting and edgy joke about this story. I am not going there, but I will say this one does have a happy ending…

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Just like trail runs or hikes, it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…
Chance the Rapper is a Chicago native, but this tune is all about the Minnesota State Fair…why? In it, he describes when only 3,333 tickets were sold for a show in a venue that could hold 14,000. Not wanting to pull out and disappoint the fans, despite the advice from others, he went ahead and did his job and entertained those there. Showing up and giving what you can, no matter who is watching. That’s the spirit!
