“Keep your face always towards the sunshine - and the shadows will fall behind you.”
Walt Whitman
When I read this quote and as the weather turns colder in the Northern Hemisphere, I am reminded of one of my favourite words, Apricity. This beautiful and not much-used word was supposedly invented by Henry Cockeram in the early 17th century - means the feeling on your skin of the sun’s warmth on a cold winter’s day. Next time you stand in the sun with your face and neck craned towards the light and feel the energy warming you up, think of this word. The power and strength that come from the sun’s energy are essential to our well-being. Just ask the plants around us and see them leaning towards the light. The quote also serves as a reminder to keep a positive mindset and look for the brighter moments in life. These thoughts can help us navigate the darker times. Hopefully, we can then leave the darkness behind and, as we move forward, grow and thrive. Wherever you are this festive period, I hope you find some sunshine, literal or figurative, to brighten your days and keep you filled with positive energy…
