"The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning."

Pelé

I almost met the Brazilian football legend Pelé once at the draw ceremony for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. As you can imagine, Pelé’s appearance was a highlight for the many people gathered. His simple arrival into the hall was greeted with cheers and applause. Shortly before the proceedings began, I was fortunate to be near the man himself and poised to say hello and take a photo with him…but just as it was my turn, an official gently touched his arm and led him away…and just like that, and much like the defenders in the past who tried to mark him, I got close to the man, but not close enough to secure the victory before he disappeared into the crowds and the chance was gone. This experience did show me that even one of the most celebrated and gifted athletes we have ever had the pleasure of watching perform is mortal. A man whose success and celebrated position did not happen overnight but through years of work and toil to practice and perfect a craft. Whatever difficulties you face in achieving victory are personal to you and should be celebrated when achieved. You don’t need to be a feted world star like Pelé to find happiness in getting results and winning each of those battles you face; just don’t expect to have fans lining up for your photo and being disappointed when they miss out…not yet, anyway…

Until next week, be safe and enjoy the trails...

Each week, I update the Kings of the Trail playlist with a new selection of music. Just like trail runs or hikes, it will be a varied and eclectic journey, but hopefully, there will be something for everyone to enjoy…

It is only fitting that with a quote from the legend himself, Pelé, I have a tune by a band from his native Brazil. Natiruts is a Brazilian-funk-reggae group with some lively, fun tunes that put on a great, energetic live show. This one about finding joy and freedom inside music is one of my favourites…levante-se e dance!
