It’s an unavoidable truth. Fear of life closes off more opportunities for us than fear of death ever does.”
Agnes Moorehead
About 20 years ago, I was watching television with a friend when a documentary came on. We watched in fascination as the short broadcast focussed on one man’s extraordinary life and achievements. This incredible person had served in the forces during the war, completed as an athlete at the Olympics and was the oldest man to complete the gruelling Iditarod - the 1,000-mile dog-sledge race across Alaska - and these were just some of the highlights amongst many other of his astounding feats. The focus of this thrilling documentary was a guy named Norman D. Vaughan, and the show culminated in the then 89-year-old successfully summiting Mount Vaughan (yes, the mountain was named after him - he was part of the group that mapped these same Antarctic mountains over 60 years earlier.) When asked at the summit how he felt about being on top of a mountain that he had waited so long to conquer, he replied in crisp, slightly breathless words, “Young and old - dream big and dare to fail.” I have never forgotten this documentary or Norman’s quote - the incredible wisdom, dedication and vision to complete such amazing feats when most would be content with staying warm, dry and safe. His undertaking shows us all that by shaking off the fear of life and embracing opportunities; we can all achieve our own incredible, memorable and life-affirming endeavours…just don’t expect to have a mountain named after you in the process…
